This student spotlight is all about Alicia Cardinell, a recent Graphic Design graduate from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a minor in Advertising and Public Relations. You can view some of Alicia’s work on her Boonle portfolio as well as her website.

What made you want to get started in your field of study?

I have always had a love of art. I found that I also liked the challenges computer science presented. So, I chose design. A practical creative field that is all about solving problems.

What project have you worked on that you enjoyed most and why?

My favorite project has been an Orange juice packaging redesign for Wegmans. They came in and briefed us and we got split into teams that had graphic designers, industrial designers, and packaging science majors. It was interesting learning about and working with people of different backgrounds.

What experiences have you had that you feel may benefit other students just getting started?

One experience I had on Boonle actually was the client told me their idea and their coworkers ideas and I gave them my honest design opinion of why the idea they had wouldn’t work. The client appreciated my honesty and with my learned option, was able to use me as a reference as to why his coworker’s idea wouldn’t have worked. Even if you’re afraid that the client won’t agree, you can’t go wrong with honesty and tact.

What is your ultimate goal? What will you do if/when you get there?

I would like to work in an agency that does a bit of everything from digital to print. I really do enjoy all the aspects of design. Currently I am at an internship in NYC and I am hoping it is a step in the right direction.
