This student spotlight is all about Christina Thorpe, a 4th year Graphic Design student at the Rochester Institute of Technology with a minor in Advertising and Public Relations. You can view some of Christina’s work on her Boonle portfolio as well as her RIT portfolio.

What made you want to get started in your field of study?

I LOVE art. Every form, shape, size, color. I became fascinated with branding and advertising at a young age, and always aspired to do it myself. I mean, its artwork that everyone sees, all the time. What better an honor? The more I learn about design, the more I want to do it.

What project have you worked on that you enjoyed most and why?

The project I have enjoyed most was a birth announcement. I actually just did this yesterday. The client asked for something that looked like the NASA Visions of the Future posters…Lucky him, I have the entire series hanging in my living room! I was so inspired because it was referencing work I was already in love with. I love looking at great design work like that for inspiration and motivation. It really helps drive me. The client was quick to communicate, honest, and clear. It was a great experience all over.

What experiences have you had that you feel may benefit other students just getting started?

I’ve definitely learned to ask a lot of questions. This helps get a great feel of what the client wants. Sometimes, they have no clue what they want, and thats where the questions come in. Rather than asking, what do you like? It is much more beneficial to ask, what are your company values, or who is your target audience? I also tend to produce a lot of quick, unique ideas first. When the client sees these, they can choose one and I can get a feel of what direction they want to go in. It’s much easier for them to choose than describe specific desires.

What is your ultimate goal? What will you do if/when you get there?

My ultimate goal is to become a creative director at a big fancy agency 🙂 I love keeping busy, and this would be the best place for me to be busy. I am a great leader, and I have so many ideas. As a creative director, I could work with all the elements, design, writing, photography. What’s not to love? As far as what type of agency…who knows! Ha! I love advertising, but I am really passionate about all graphic design; illustration, logos, branding, information, packaging, editorial, UX. I love it all. I’m so passionate about this field, I’m always up for new experiences, learning more each day!
